Transition to SpringIt’s April 5th, according to the calendar Spring arrived a little over two weeks ago on March 20th however, according to the weather, winter and spring are playing double dutch. Winter (rope 1) is swinging it’s efforts in an outward motion, Summer (rope 2) is swinging it’s efforts in an inward motion and we the people are jumping in and of the cycle daily.  

One of the biggest issues this vicious cycle causes is what to wear daily.  So in preparing to transition my clothing from Winter to Spring, I’ve found that 5 items are a necessity until mother nature let’s Spring have it’s way.

1.     Lightweight Scarf-  these lovely pieces of fabric can either help keep your neck and ears warm, add a simple pop of color to your outfit or turn into a nice headpiece if need be. No matter which option you chose, it’s a great item that can casually lend itself to the winter spring double dutch.

2.     Denim/cropped twill jacket/leather or suede jacket great for layering. Perfect to wear over sweater with a scarf on cooler days. Great to wear with a lighter fabric or tee shirt on warmer days (scarf can still be worn as an accessory). An easy way to remove a layer or add the layer back and be totally ready for however the winds blows that day

3.     Trench Coat- a nice all weather trench coat is fabulous during this time of transition. Typically with a inner lining that can be removed, it can provide warmth on the more brisk days and give you the option as a more breathable airy fabric during the warmer temperatures. Bonus, because they are typically water resistant you are prepared for spring showers or the random snow shower that may creep in.

4.     Ankle Boots- these babies have become a go to during this time where temperatures are fluctuating. Offers great flexibility with jeans or dresses with or without tights

5.     Sunglasses- yes this is an accessory but much needed on sunny days of winter or spring besides it adds a little extra something to finish your look for the day.

Be sure to add pops of color…nothing says Spring like vibrant colors.

It’s the first day of spring, amazing aroma’s filled the air and taste buds were tingling as some of Baltimore’s best prepared to engage the senses with their culinary crafts. Pastries, entrees, appetizers, drinks and more kept attendees engaged as they attended Taste Baltimore at The Living Well Center.

One of the highlights of the event was a the black box challenge. The chefs who participated had to create a dish out of the following ingredients: purple soda, cherrios, salmon, oyster mushroom, avocado and tomato. The winner of the challenge was Chef Justin Holoman, his dish is featured below.

oil 1A great way to help remove toxins from your skin and gently encourage daily pollutants and toxins from your body.

What you will need:

  • Round Body Brush
  • Scrubbing mitt
  • Epsom Salts
  • Sea Salt
  • Baking soda
  • Your favorite aromatherapy oil
  • Minced ginger
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Coconut Oil
  • Exfoliating Scrub
  • Large Soft Bath Towel
  • Pumice Stone (for feet)

To Do:

Take a quick water only shower, just rinse and free your body of any chemical, sweat, etc that may be on your skin.

Using your bath towel, pat your body dry then let your body continue to air dry as you prepare your bath water. Fill your tub with hot water as you can stand, not scalding but at a temperature that you can comfortably feel warm to the point that your face may perspire.

Add

  • 2 cups of Epsom Salt
  • 2 cups of sea salt
  • 2 cups of baking soda
  • Several drops of your favorite aromatherapy oil
  • 3-5 teaspoons of minced ginger
  • 1 cup of apple cider vinegar
  • Add rose petals for aesthetics (optional)

To Do

  1. Use your body brush in circular motions up and down your body to complete the dry scrub process to help release toxins
  2. Soak in the detox bath that you created, relax, take deep cleansing  breaths and soak for 15-20 minutes
  3. If you chose to exfoliate, finish your bath, carefully step out of your tub, do not dry your body, drain the bath water.  Step back into the tub when the bath water is drained and gently use your exfoliating scrub all over your body. Start at your feet using your pumice stone to remove any dead skin from your feet. Then using your scrubbing mitt with back and forth strokes to exfoliate the rest of your body. Use a long handled bath brush for your back. You may perspire while scrubbing which is perfectly fine.  When exfoliating is complete, rinse body.  For a gentle rinsing use a small bucket or cup to splash clean instead of the spray form the shower, be sure to use hot water for whatever method you chose.
  4. Using your hands to wash your body with black soap or your favorite soap and rinse. Pat yourself dry well then liberally use a nourishing moisturizer all over your body. My personal favorite is pure coconut oil.Take about 15 minutes to relax and allow your body to cool down.

Suggestion: When you have finished your detox bath, plan to only participate in relaxing activities for the remainder of the evening. Drink plenty of H20 (optional add lemon)
